Bigger, better summer events programme
An exciting array of outdoor adventures promise fun in the sun for the whole family, in Greater Wellington’s biggest ever Great Outdoors summer events programme.
“Our parks and forests are magnificent backdrops to our region… so why not make this summer a time to discover and explore these places of incredible natural beauty? You might be surprised at the wealth of recreational opportunities, right on your back doorstep,” says Cr Chris Laidlaw, Chair of Greater Wellington’s Regional Sustai΅ability Committee.
Cr Laidlaw says that Greater Wellington has worked hard to make the Great Outdoors summer events programme (formerly known as the Regional Outdoors Programme) accessible to people of all incomes, so most of the events are free or low-cost. And with 63 events, there’s something for everyone, from gentle nature walks led by expert guides from Greater Wellington and community environmental groups, through to adventure sports events organised in partnership with local recreation clubs.
Highlights include the Nature Discovery Treasure Hunt at Kaitoke Regional Park, free 4WD rides and guided walks at the Belmont Regional Park Open Day, the Chrystalls Bend Lagoon Walk in Otaki, an opportunity to find out how Battle Hill got its name at Waitangi Weekend History Walk in Battle Hill Farm Forest Park, and a tour of Wairarapa Moana the largest wetland in the lower North Island.
Old favourites are still there such as buggy walks, Beginners Guide to Fly Fishing, Glow Worm Grotto, Gravel Grabs, Rimutaka Rail Trail, the Karapoti Classic mountain bike race, and of course Kev the Wandering Kiwi.
The events take place from 27 December 2009 to 1 April 2010. You can view the programme on Greater Wellington's website www.gw.govt.nz/events
