Bomb threat investigation commenced

Bomb threat investigation commenced

Wellington Police want to identify the male depicted in CCTV footage from today's attempted bank robbery at the National Bank on Featherston Street, Wellington.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Borrell says a bomb detection operation commenced involving a full evacuation of the bank and some surrounding buildings. A thorough search was completed by specialist Police staff including bomb detection and search experts.

He says no devices were located during the search and Police have now launched a full criminal investigation into the incident, which caused major disruption to Wellington's CBD for several hours.

"Thankfully, no one was hurt during the incident. We are thankful to members of the public who stayed away from the CBD when asked by Police during the evacuation and search."

The evacuation was sparked when a threat was received by National Bank staff and appears to be part of an attempt to rob the bank.

Police are interested in speaking with the male depicted in the attached image who was seen outside the National Bank just prior to the incident at approximately 2.40pm. He is described as:

• Male with olive skin. • Thin build. • Approx 170cm tall. • Aged in his mid 20s. • Short dark hair, wearing a light coloured baseball cap or similar. • Wearing a waist-length red jacket possibly with white logo on left breast, blue jeans, light coloured sports shoes. • Wearing a dark coloured backpack.

Members of the public with information about the incident or knowledge of the male's identity are urged to call Wellington Police on 0800 TIPOFF (0800 847 633).

Gordon Campbell: On The Government’s Smokefree Laws Debacle

The most charitable explanation for National’s behaviour over the smokefree legislation is that they have dutifully fulfilled the wishes of the Big Tobacco lobby and then cast around for excuses that might sell this health policy U-turn to the public. The less charitable view is that the government was being deliberately misleading. Are we to think Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is a fool or a liar? It seems rather early on in his term of office to be facing that unpleasant choice... More

Public Housing Futures: Christmas Comes Early For Landlords

New CTU analysis of the National & ACT coalition agreement has shown the cost of returning interest deductibility to landlords is an extra $900M on top of National’s original proposal. This is because it is going to be implemented earlier and faster, including retrospective rebates from April 2023. More

Green Party: Petition To Save Oil & Gas Ban

“The new Government’s plan to expand oil and gas exploration is as dangerous as it is unscientific. Whatever you think about the new government, there is simply no mandate to trash the climate. We need to come together to stop them,” says James Shaw. More

PSA: MFAT Must Reverse Decision To Remove Te Reo

MFAT's decision to remove te reo from correspondence before new Ministers are sworn in risks undermining the important progress the public sector has made in honouring te Tiriti. "We are very disappointed in what is a backward decision - it simply seems to be a Ministry bowing to the racist rhetoric we heard on the election campaign trail," says Marcia Puru.
