Proposed City Plan Change To
Improve Urban Design
The Christchurch City Council
has proposed a plan change to improve the design of future
development in and around the central city.
Carolyn Ingles, Programme Manager Liveable City, says, “The plan change focuses on the appearance and urban design of new developments by adding rules and assessment criteria.”
The new rules include; trees and landscaping for each new development, reasonably sized and accessible outdoor space and adequate distances between living room windows of neighbouring developments.
Areas which will benefit from this plan change are primarily in or near the central city – typically within the ‘Four Avenues’ – St Albans, Spreydon, Addington, Upper Riccarton, Richmond and Linwood.
This plan change is in response to growing concerns from local residents regarding the look and feel of developments within these areas over the past decade. It also aligns with the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy to support attractive, liveable neighbourhoods.
The plan change is to be notified early 2010, which will allow public to present submissions before an appointed hearings panel.
