18 year old charged with Kawaha Point aggravated robbery

Rotorua Police have arrested an 18 year old Whakatane man following an aggravated robbery at the Kawaha Point Dairy on Monday 28 December.

The man has been charged with aggravated robbery. He is currently in Police custody and will appear in the Rotorua District Court on Saturday 2 January, 2010.

The officer in charge of Rotorua CIB, Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Loper, says the man entered the dairy about 4pm on 28 December.

“The man produced a knife and demanded money and cigarettes, and then left the shop with a very small amount of money and a packet of tobacco.”

Detective Loper says the dairy owners were shaken, but unharmed, during the incident.

He says clear CCTV footage from inside the dairy was a key factor in identifying and arresting the offender.

“The dairy owners were able to give us good details about the incident, and provided us with clear footage which was a huge assistance to our inquiries.

“I’m pleased that, with their help, we have been able to deliver a result and a level of resolution for them.”

Detective Loper says businesses across the Rotorua area are increasingly making use of security features such as CCTV technology, and this should serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders.
