Otago flood advisory Wednesday 26 May 1200 hours
26 May 2010
The flood risk in North Otago, Dunedin, and the Taieri catchment is expected to gradually decrease over the next day.
ORC duty flood manager Matt Hickey said the Silver Stream peaked at 8.30am this morning, with the flow now steady at approximately 112 cumecs. This is around 40 cumecs below the level at which water begins to spill across the Gordon Road Spillway.
The Taieri River at Outram was steady at 930 cumecs at noon, but is expected to remain high during the day as floodwaters make their way down from the upper Taieri catchment.
Water is now spilling into the upper ponding area after the floodgate was lowered by Council staff this morning. Unauthorised people had raised the gate in the early hours of this morning. The matter has been raised with the police who are investigating. Council encourages anyone with any information on this to contact the police directly.
The MetService is forecasting further rain across eastern Otago throughout today, but no further high intensity rains are expected at this stage. Additional rainfall is expected to reach between 20 and 40mm, with intensities of between 4 and 6mm per hour.
Meanwhile, floods in North Otago look to have peaked, with the Shag, Kakanui and Waianakarua Rivers all dropping from yesterday's peak flows. The MetService is not expecting any further significant rain in North Otago today.
The Kakanui River at SH1 (Maheno) has dropped approximately 600mm this morning, as the river continues to recede.
Council is continuing to advise those living in low-lying areas to keep a close watch on river flows and inform Council of any flooding.
"Although no significant additional flooding is expected, the ground is still very saturated from the sustained rainfall over the last few days, and river flows can change quickly if rainfall was to increase," Mr Hickey said.
A dedicated media flood information line has been established on 027 6022 735.
