Nominations open for Akaroa-Wairewa Community Board

Nominations open today for an Akaroa representative on the Akaroa-Wairewa Community Board. If more than one candidate puts their name forward, a by-election will be held on 10 February.

This is taking place because only two candidates put their hats in the ring for three positions on the Akaroa-Wairewa Community Board when nominations were open for October’s local body election. Nominations for the Community Board representative close on Wednesday 22 December at 12 noon.

There are a total of five positions on the Akaroa-Wairewa Community Board, with three representing Akaroa and the other two Wairewa.

Two other Akaroa representatives, Pamela Richardson and Leigh Hickey, were elected unopposed to the Board in August after nominations for the October election closed. They sit alongside Wairewa representatives Bryan Morgan and Stewart Miller, who were elected last month.

Electoral Officer Clare Sullivan says anyone wishing to stand as a candidate must be a New Zealand citizen, aged over 18 and enrolled on the parliamentary electoral roll.

“Community Boards represent and act as advocates for their communities. People do not need any specific skills or qualifications to stand for election to a Board. Most important is that they have a strong desire to serve their community,” she says.

Anyone wishing to stand for election must be nominated by two people, both of whom must be over 18 years old and enrolled to vote in the area their nominee wishes to stand in. Nominees must pay a $200 deposit.
