Mayor Winters extends sympathy to West Coasters on behalf of Rotorua community

ROTORUA 25.11.10: The New Zealand flag is flying at half mast today on the Rotorua District Council Civic Centre in acknowledgement of the victims of the Pike River tragedy.

Rotorua Mayor Kevin Winters has sent a message of sympathy and support to the people of the West Coast. The message was sent to Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn this morning. A transcript of the message is as follows:

Dear Mayor Tony

Re: Pike River Mine tragedy

Like New Zealanders everywhere we were numbed when we heard the tragic news of yesterday. It was a black day for not only the West Coast but for all New Zealand.

And here in Rotorua we are sharing the grief that naturally accompanies such horrific news.

Our hearts go out to the families of those who have perished, and to you and your community.

Today we all feel we are West Coasters to some extent as we join with you in trying to comprehend such a tragic outcome and such unimaginable loss of humanity.

I would appreciate you letting the families and your wider community know that out thoughts are with you all today and will remain with you over the difficult days ahead.

However we know only too well of the spirit, resilience and fortitude of Coasters. You have survived tragedies before. So we have every confidence that the close knit and supportive nature of West Coast communities will help your people to get through this shocking event, even though the pain will take some time to diminish.

Please let me know if there is any assistance you and your council need that we might be able to provide.

In the meantime, on behalf of my council and the whole Rotorua community, please accept our sincere condolences and our very best wishes for the future.

Our thoughts are with you all.
