First Golden Mile traffic flow change happens tomorrow

Traffic will flow in the other direction through lower Cuba Street from tomorrow (Friday 26 November).

The street will still be one-way but people wanting to look for a car park there or drive through, will need to enter via the Taranaki Street-end of Manners Street from now on. On this stretch of Manners Street, heading the other way, it will be bus-only from this Sunday.

Buses begin using the new Golden Mile bus route via Willis and Manners streets from 5am on Sunday 28 November.

Wellington City Council Infrastructure Director Stavros Michael says signs associated with the new route and roading changes are being put up this week in preparation for the route change

These will be uncovered in the early hours of Sunday morning and the new traffic lights switched on as the route becomes operational.

“It’s a complex logistical exercise making sure everything is ready to go so we have identified a few changes that can be made slightly in advance."

The direction change in lower Cuba Street is one of those things.

He says there will be someone stationed at the intersection of Wakefield and Cuba streets over the next few days to help ensure drivers don’t turn into Cuba Street. Signs are being put up in lower Cuba Street to remind pedestrians that they need to look the other way.

Traffic will be able to exit on to Wakefield Street from lower Cuba Street in both directions.

Lower Cuba Street will be revamped next year as a shared space where pedestrians will have priority. Work is due to begin in January and will be complete before Rugby World Cup 2011.
