Wellington District Police staff to contribute to Operation Raid this weekend

Wellington District Police are contributing to a joint Australia/New Zealand drink-drive enforcement operation this weekend.

Dubbed Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers), the campaign is timed to coincide with the beginning of the holiday season and is intended to keep the pressure on drivers to make sure that their driving is safe at all times, not just most of the time.

Wellington Police District Road Policing Manager Inspector Peter Baird says traffic alcohol staff will be conducting high volume checkpoints over the weekend, with the intention of randomly testing as many drivers as possible.

"We want the community to know that drinking and driving is a significant risk. Our goal is to test as many of the Wellington driving population as possible over the summer period, starting this weekend."

Inspector Baird says alcohol and drugs are major contributors to increases in road trauma. Improved driver behaviour will save lives. Alcohol is consistently in the top three causes of road trauma, along with speeding and failing to wear seatbelts. These drivers are prepared to place the lives of others at risk for the sake of a drink.

"Operation RAID and other similar campaigns are designed to target and remove as many drink and drug drivers as possible from our roads throughout the Wellington district.”
