Volunteers among award recipients

Thirteen civilian volunteers from throughout the Auckland City Police District will be among those who will receive the District Commander's Certificate of Appreciation at tomorrow's Medals Awards Ceremony in the Auckland Town Hall.

Most of the volunteers hail from eastern suburbs, namely Kohimarama, Meadowbank and Glen Innes, while others are from Hillsborough, Epsom and Greenlane.

Other civilians will be presented with the certificate in recognition of assistance they gave to Police after having observed a crime being committed or coming to the aid of an officer who was being assaulted.

Patrick Knight is one such recipient who, since tackling and detaining a man who had carried out an aggravated robbery in Western Springs, has joined the Police.

Another is 15 year-old Emilou Hohaia of Glen Innes who, after an assault had occurred in the Glen Innes Shopping Centre, performed CPR until the arrival of Police - with no assistance from a crowd of bystanders - on a 15 year old male victim whose heart had stopped.

In addition, several serving Police staff will be awarded the District Commander's Commendation for their outstanding work in the district.

Police Minister Judith Collins, Auckland Mayor Len Brown, Assistant Commissioner Allan Boreham and Superintendent George Fraser, will be officiating at the ceremony tomorrow morning at 10am in the Auckland Town Hall.
