Inland Revenue has added information about debt and compliance to its range of statistics updated annually on its website.

Last year was the first time Inland Revenue published a range of statistics about tax revenue and social entitlements. In its first year, this section of the website was visited by more then 20,000 people.

This year, the agency has added 10 new sections—five relate to debt and five to compliance. It has also updated data and added the 2009 statistics. The revenue statistics cover the years from July 2001 to June 2009, and customer statistics are available from April 2001 to March 2009.

The new debt section includes data on total overdue debt grouped by tax types, debt age, number of debtors, and social area debt, including student loans and child support.

The new compliance section shows proportions of filings and payments made on time by tax types; the percentage of child support payments made in full and on time; and the percentage of student loan customers meeting their obligations.

The section also contains data on customers’ awareness of their obligations and community perceptions about how easy it is to comply. More than 80% of customers responded that they are able to easily get the information they need from Inland Revenue.

The tax statistics include only data collected by Inland Revenue and do not duplicate statistics available separately from other sources such as Statistics New Zealand or the Treasury.
