Wellington: The Most Favourite Little Capital in the World?

Wellington: The Most Favourite Little Capital in the World?

Just weeks after being hailed the ‘coolest little capital in the world’ by Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2011, Wellington has again been named New Zealand’s favourite destination in the Fly Buys/Colmar Brunton Mood of the Traveller Survey.

Positively Wellington Tourism Chief Executive David Perks says the capital has now topped the popularity stakes four out of the five quarterly surveys to date.

With January traditionally among Wellington’s quietest times of year, it is hoped the results indicate New Zealanders will book in for summer in the city.

”As well as all the usual good times, the new year sees plenty of events on the calendar – there’s a number of Phoenix matches, a BLACKCAPS test against Pakistan at the Basin, Wellington Cup Day and the waterfront will be pumping courtesy of the Velux 5 Oceans yacht race stopover.”

Wellington also has good news for the 43% of Kiwis intending to travel overseas in the next six months – save time and money and get a taste of a European summer in the capital instead, Mr Perks says.

“The European Masters exhibition at Te Papa is offering an unprecedented opportunity to see almost 100 masterpieces from one of the finest collections in Europe and Wellington’s full plate of French and Italian restaurants are world class; there’s no need to head across to the other side of the world, we’ve got it all here.”
