Launching Welfare Justice

Wednesday 8 December

The Welfare Justice (The Alternative Welfare Working Group) final report launch will be held on Thursday 9 December.

Downtown Community Ministry (DCM) encourages people to attend the launch and hear the conclusions and recommendations of the Group.

Stephanie McIntyre, director of DCM says “As our Annual Report highlighted, there has been a dramatic reduction in the availability of part-time and casual jobs. And this is at a time when the Government is considering making changes to our social welfare system”.

Prime Minister John Key has said that the Government would be adopting some of the recommendations of the cabinet mandated Welfare Working Group, such as a five-year time limit on benefits for those deemed able to work.

Welfare Justice was formed in response to this Group, amid concern some organisations and sectors of the community were not having their opinions heard. Welfare Justice has held national meetings, invited submissions and discussions, and are now releasing their report.

“DCM is looking forward to receiving the Welfare Justice report. We support the goals of Welfare Justice - a welfare system that is fair, cares of the vulnerable and treats people with dignity, meeting needs and creating a society that allows people to flourish and reach their full potential,” says Stephanie.

The launch is being held at the Catholic Cathedral Plaza, Hill Street, Thorndon at 12.30pm tomorrow.
