Bus driver run over by own bus outside Waikato Hospital

Police and work safety investigators are currently working to establish the cause of an incident that saw a bus driver critically injured after being run over by a bus outside the entrance to Waikato Hospital this morning.

Sergeant Craig Taylor said emergency services were called to the main entrance to the hospital's car park about 9.15am.

"It appears a bus driver has parked his bus with the vehicle in gear and the bus has moved forward.

"Attempting to stop it the 52-year-old man was run over by the bus and suffered critical injuries. He is now in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit."

Serious Crash Unit and Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit staff are currently at the scene working to establish the circumstances the incident.

Hospital staff are carrying out a blessing of the site with Kaumatua present and the bus is being removed from the scene.
