Aggravated robbery in Wellington

Police are investigating an aggravated robbery in Wellington today where a dairy store employee was threatened by two males carrying an axe.

Detective Sergeant Martin Todd says at about 12 midday, the 59 year-old victim was working in the Broderick Dairy, corner Broderick Road and Philip Street, Johnsonville, Wellington, when 2 males walked into the store.

"The males walked towards the store employee who was behind the counter. The victim was threatened with a small axe that one of the males was holding. The males took cigarettes and cash before running from the store. Outside the shop the males ran east along Broderick Road, (towards the Johnsonville Mall), turned left into Dr Taylor Terrace, where they were seen getting into a vehicle."

Detective Sergeant Todd says the victim was not injured during the incident, however he was shaken as a result of the robbery.

"It was a brazen robbery, especially as this occurred in broad daylight with a number of people in the area. We hope that the public can assist in identifying the persons involved."

The offenders are described as Maori or Polynesian males, both approximately 20 years old. One was wearing dark coloured clothing and the other blue clothing.

Detective Sergeant Todd says, "Police are appealing for any witnesses to the robbery or any suspicious activity around the time of the incident. We are interested in hearing from any people who saw the two offenders run along Broderick Road or the vehicle that the offenders got into that was parked on Dr Taylor Terrace."
