Chch quake survivors will benefit from ethnic day

JOHNSONVILLE will do its bit for earthquake-ravaged Christchurch by donating proceeds from this weekend’s ethnic celebrations.

Wellington communities will come together in Johnsonville Community Centre’s main hall on Saturday (SUBS: March 12) to mark the theme of this year’s Race Relations Day, “Living in Harmony”.

There will be ethnic food stalls and diverse cultural entertainment, as well as participation from Whitireia Community Polytechnic music students and DJs from the NZ Radio Training School’s station, Kool FM.

The theme of Race Relations Day - observed the world over each year for the elimination of racial discrimination - ties in well with the community response to recent events in Christchurch, says organiser Murali Kumar from the Ministry of Social Development.

“One of the most notable outcomes following the February 22 earthquake is the way that communities all over the world have rallied to support the people of Christchurch,” he says.

The event will run from 11am to 2.30pm and will be attended by local MP Peter Dunne and other dignitaries.

Entry is free, with proceeds donated to the Red Cross Christchurch Earthquake relief fund.
