Female, 18, prosecuted for supplying alcohol to minor

18 year old Wairarapa female prosecuted for supplying alcohol to a minor

An 18 year old woman has recently received diversion in the Masterton District Court for supplying alcohol to a minor, who was hospitalised for extreme intoxication.

Wairarapa Police Alcohol Harm Reduction Officer, Constable Dean Fawcett says an incident was reported to Police in late May 2011, where a 14 year old girl returned home so intoxicated that she required hospitalisation.

"We know that it's not uncommon for older friends and associates to buy and supply liquor to younger people but it's illegal."

He says this recent case before the Courts should send a very clear message to others about the dangers of buying and supplying alcohol to minors.

"Often when young people are being supplied with alcohol, there is no supervision and consumption levels are not monitored, posing a real risk to that vulnerable teenager."

Constable Fawcett says where Police are aware of similar instances of underage people being supplied alcohol illegally, those responsible will be prosecuted.

"If you have any concerns about similar instances, I urge you to contact the Wairarapa Police on (06) 370 0300 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
