9.10am update - Waikato CDEM group to remain on alert

The Waikato Civil Defence Emergency Management Group emergency coordinating centre in Hamilton will remain activated in monitoring mode despite the cancellation of a tsunami warning.

The warning followed the earthquake this morning in the Tonga-Kermadec trench to the north-east of New Zealand.

Despite the cancellation of the warning, there is still potential for stronger currents than normal and unusual water patterns around the coast. On the Coromandel, these factors may be exacerbated this morning by an incoming tide.

People are urged to exercise caution in coastal areas and stay up to date with any fresh advice that is issued.

The Group emergency coordinating centre is expected to remain activated in monitoring mode for at least the next day or so to keep an eye on the situation.
