Search for missing trapper continuing in Canterbury
09JUL11 1600 hrs

High winds have affected helicopter operations as the search for 83 year old Allan HILL continues in Canterbury.

Mr HILL, from Loburn, has been missing since Wednesday when he went into the bush at Ashley Gorge to lay a line of possum traps. He failed to return home on Wednesday evening. He was not equipped for an overnight stay and conditions in the area have been very cold and windy with fresh snow on the tops.

Search coordinator Sergeant Ryan O’Rourke said strong north-west winds have meant an Air Force Iroquois helicopter has had to return to Christchurch. The LandSAR teams in the field have continued searching and will walk out tonight.

The number of LandSAR volunteers taking part in the search has been boosted to around 70 today, with 10 Police staff and 2 LandSAR dog teams. They are concentrating on searching a high probability area around where a possum trap line was located.

The terrain is steep and covered with thick bush. Nothing further of relevance has been located today.
