September 2011
Whether you’re a tree lover or rugby
enthusiast, we’d love you to join us planting native
trees, honouring our rugby legends. Living Legends plantings
are happening right throughout NZ during Rugby World Cup
2011, celebrating our treasured environment and our beloved
game.
Living Legends is managing 17 native tree planting
projects throughout New Zealand during Rugby World Cup 2011.
We are working with provincial rugby unions and community
groups for each planting, and we’d love overseas visitors
and locals to join us in supporting and enjoying our natural
heritage. As well as that we are honouring our rugby legends
– each planting site is dedicated to a New Zealand rugby
icon.
In Northland, Living Legends is planting at the
Uretiti Rest Area which is located on State Highway 1 just
south of Ruakaka and forms part of the Bream Bay coastal
reserve between the state highway and the beach. The
Northland Rugby Legend is Richie Guy – the former All
Black who despite a late start as a representative, was a
leading player for many years with a flair for scoring
tries.

October
Russell-Kororareka
Hell Hole of the Pacific
Russell, Bay of
Islands
Friday 7th October until Sunday 23 October
2011
Russell is recreating its most infamous days when
Kororareka was known as the Hell-hole of the Pacific. The
streets of this now charming village will once again see the
likes of whalers, warriors, loose women, missionaries and
townsfolk of 1830-1847.
The “Hell-hole” project is designed to offer visitors a glimpse into lively history. Each day a series of entertaining scenarios will be presented around the village. In addition, any building that existed during the Hell-hole period will be identified by the creative figures of artist Helen Pick and as patrons enter those establishments, they will be greeted by the ‘innkeeper’ or other appropriate personage and can hear the stories of that character or the history of the building.
From tempers to Temperance, Russell is unique
and the only place in NZ with a history for tourists to
‘begin where it all began”. This is going to be a
mind-boggling experience for all those who visit Russell,
and there is no charge to step back in time – so plan a
few days stay in Russell or hop on the ferry for a day trip.
As well as being in the Hell Hole - you will find delightful
restaurants, stunning views, beautiful beaches and plenty to
do!

Waitangi
Treaty Grounds, Tau Henare Drive Waitangi
Tuesday 18
October to Thursday 20 October 2011, 9am to 5pm,
Visiting the birthplace of the nation will be the
highlight of 2011! The Treaty Grounds are planning a
remarkable three days of celebration and entertainment.
The Waitangi National Trust will host three days of
celebration for visitors and locals alike. Over the three
days, there will be Maori cultural events, rugby-inspired
happenings and quintessentially Kiwi events such as
(possibly) wood chopping and the like. The programme is
intended to give visitors an insight into what it means to
be a New Zealander, a glimpse of our history and it is also
designed to be a lot of fun!
During this time, there
will be a number of cruise ships anchored in the Bay which
will add to the spectacle. The marine environment, as
always at Waitangi, will be a special feature and it is
planned that a flotilla of waka and other vessels will be
out on the water.

The
Fonterra Shout
Barge Park Showgrounds,
Whangarei
24th October 2011
Fonterra farmers are
hanging up the milking aprons and heading into town to join
local Fonterra staff in laying on a shout for the community.
The co-operative is celebrating its 10th birthday by hosting
a free family day out at Barge Park, one of six to be held
across the main dairying regions around the country.
The Northland shout at Barge Park will see farmers manning the barbecues, handing out Tip Top ice creams and setting the stage for great Kiwi entertainers so everyone in the community can let their hair down in a true Kiwi day out. “It’s a good feeling to be part of a great Kiwi success story and our 10 year milestone is a great opportunity to share some of that pride with our neighbours and communities and to say thanks for their support.” Says Mark Croucher (Fonterra Shareholders’ Councillor)
The shout will take
place from noon to 4.30pm, when local farmers will head back
to the farms for milking. Birthday or not, the cows can’t
wait. Fonterra will be announcing more details of the
events as details are confirmed, including the details of
charities to benefit from the events and which entertainers
will star at Barge Park on Labour Day.
