Winner to be announced for Bold Horizon National

Contemporary Art Award 2011
1 AUGUST 2011

A winner will be announced from amongst 42 finalists for the Bold Horizon National Contemporary Art Award 2011 during an award ceremony/exhibition opening at Waikato Museum this Friday, 5 August.

Sponsored by Hamilton marketing and creative agency Bold Horizon, the award has become renowned for the challenging and thought-provoking entries it attracts, and offers $15,000 in prize money to the winning entry.

Judging this year’s award is John Hurrell, well known in the national and international art scene as an art writer, critic and curator – and also an accomplished artist.

Mr Hurrell was the art curator at Waikato Museum from 2001-2004, and now resides in Auckland where he writes art-related articles and manages online magazine/art forum EyeContact.

Following Friday’s award ceremony, the work of the 42 finalists (who are all New Zealand citizens or residents) will be exhibited at Waikato Museum until 6 November.

Waikato Museum director Kate Vusoniwailala said, as one of New Zealand’s leading contemporary art award shows, Bold Horizon National Contemporary Art Award is always a highlight on Waikato Museum’s annual calendar.

“We invite the viewing public to engage with the art in the exhibition and leave their comments about a particular piece that moves them in some way,” she said.
