Marine search for missing kayaker to continue

Marine search for missing kayaker to continue until late this afternoon

A marine search for missing kayaker 19 year old Cameron Millar will continue until late this afternoon.

Police Search and Rescue Acting Sergeant Anthony Harmer says the Wellington Police Maritime Unit with Lady Liz IV and the Police National Dive Squad have been conducting a further marine search today, near to where Mr Millar last seen, around 6pm on Wednesday evening.

"From our enquiries to date, we know that Mr Millar and his companion were not wearing lifejackets. Taking this factor into consideration and the fact that Mr Millar has nearly been in the water for 48 hours, it is highly unlikely he would have been able to survive."

Acting Sergeant Harmer says this is a very sad reminder to all water users that all safety precautions need to be taken into account, before heading out on the water.

"These include being prepared and knowing the weather and water conditions first and knowing your physical limits and experience whilst on the water."

Police will reconsider their search options over the weekend.
