Statement from family of missing kayaker Cameron Millar

This statement is being issued on behalf of Ross and Jo Millar, parents of 19 year old Cameron Millar.

We wish to extend our sincere thanks to Police and all those involved in the search and rescue operation for Cameron, for their huge commitment and compassion, as we come to terms with what has happened.

Yesterday we went on the Police launch Lady Liz IV to Ward Island, near to where Cameron was last seen on Wednesday evening, as divers continued searching for him.

Navy crew are now in Wellington searching for Cameron using their sonar equipment.

We would like to thank our friends, family and wider whanau for their wonderful support and love shown to us over the last several days.

Thanks also to Cameron's friends for their expressions of love and compassion. It means so much to us to know how much Cameron was loved.

We extend our love, prayers and support to Cameron's friends too.

Cameron is one of four children, he has one older brother and two younger sisters.

Cameron grew up in Hamilton and graduated from Whitireia Polytechnic in June this year with a diploma in radio broadcasting.

Cameron loved being in Wellington, after arriving at the beginning of this year.

Cameron is a treasured son and brother. He is creative, quirky and a real individual. You couldn't find a kinder person than Cameron. He's always made us laugh with his unique sense of humour.

Thank you to everyone for your prayers for us and for Cameron. He is now in God's hands.

Our family now asks for privacy at this difficult time and do not wish to be contacted by media.
