Wellington Police District encourages fun in the snow but not near busy roads

Police are hoping residents in the Wellington District are enjoying the snow - but warn people not to play near busy roadsides.

Wellington District Road Policing Manager Inspector Peter Baird says Police don't want to spoil the fun, but motorists stopping near busy State Highways to play in the snow are putting themselves, their children and other road users in danger.

"During the recent road closure on the Rimutaka Hill Road, there were reports of children seen running between cars and crossing the road to get closer to the snow, putting themselves at real risk in the icy conditions."

Inspector Baird says, "We suggest those who want to play in the snow avoid busy roads and State Highways and find some quieter streets to enjoy the white stuff."

"Police and maintenance contractors have a busy job ensuring the safe movement of traffic over the hills and having motorists and their passengers within the vehicle flow is not a good mix."
