Search for missing kayaker concludes

Police and Navy have concluded their search for missing kayaker 19 year old Cameron Millar, following an extensive marine search over the past several days.

Officer in charge of the search Acting Sergeant Anthony Harmer says the Police National Dive Squad, the Wellington Police Maritime Unit, with Lady Liz IV and Navy officers with sonar equipment have conducted a further marine search today, following an extensive search over the weekend.

"The Navy began their search at around 7:30am this morning, accompanied by Police divers and Lady Liz IV. The Navy's sonar equipment was deployed for several hours, however sadly they have failed to find any trace of Cameron Millar."

The 19 year old was last seen by his companion near Ward Island on Wednesday 10 August, who contacted Police around 6pm.

"Since Cameron's disappearance last Wednesday night, we've conducted thorough land, aerial and marine searches, but sadly we have not found him. We would like to express our deepest sympathies to Cameron's family at this difficult time."

Police would also like to thank all those involved in the search for Cameron since Wednesday evening, including members of the Eastbourne community who assisted Land SAR and Police staff in shoreline searches, as well as Coastguard, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Airport Marine Rescue, Surf Lifesaving personnel and Navy officers.

"Again, Police remind all water users to ensure they are prepared and equipped for the conditions before heading out on the water. That means wearing a lifejacket, being prepared for the weather and water conditions and knowing your physical limits."
