Winner Of Waihemo Youth Community Spirit Award Announced

Winner Of Waihemo Youth Community Spirit Award Announced

Megan Turner from East Otago High School has been named as the winner of the TrustPower Waihemo Youth Community Spirit Award.

Run in conjunction with the TrustPower Waihemo Community Awards, the TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award recognises secondary school students' service to the school and the community. The Award is jointly run by TrustPower and the Waitaki District Council.

East Otago High School was asked to recommend one student to be considered for the Award.

To be considered for the TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award students had to have given service to school or community projects, treated others with care and respect and been a good ambassador for the school and the Waihemo region.

TrustPower Community Relations Representative Jess Somerville says Megan is a bubbly, busy and focused student who is heavily involved in her school.

Megan charges a variety of Community projects and fundraisers as chairperson on the student council. Currently you can find her organising a school social which aims to raise funds for a new school van. This is a great example of Megan's generosity as although her year will receive little benefit from this fundraising she pursues this effort regardless.

Through her captaincy, coaching, peer support and community work it's not hard to see why Megan has won this Award," says Miss Somerville.

For winning the Award, Megan will receive a framed certificate and $500 prize money, with $250 going to Megan personally and $250 being given to a community group of her choice.

The TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award will be presented at the TrustPower Waihemo Community Awards, being held tonight, Monday 22 August, when Megan will announce which community group will receive her $250 donation.
