Pedestrian hit by car in Karaka

Police can confirm that it was a 53 year-old male pedestrian who was taken to hospital in a critical condition this morning after he was hit by a car on State Highway 22 in Karaka.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:50am. The man was on his way to work and had just disembarked his bus and attempted to cross the road when he was hit by a vehicle travelling East.

The female driver of the vehicle, in her sixties, was uninjured but visibly shaken.

The Serious Crash Unit attended the scene and their investigation continues.

Inspector Gary Hill, Area Commander for Counties Manukau South says "It has been a truly horrific morning on Franklin roads today with one death and two people critically injured."

"We urge all motorists to take extreme care when they get behind the wheel and not to get complacent. Pedestrians too need to stay vigilant, especially when crossing busy roads."

If you witnessed the crash and have not already spoken with Police, please contact Constable Alison Jelley at the Serious Crash Unit on 09 261 1300.
