Childrens' health assessed after discovery of meth lab in Hamilton home

Waikato Police say the discovery of a suspected methamphetamine lab in a Hamilton home where three children live demonstrates the risks offenders are willing to take in the pursuit of their illegal products.

Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall of the Waikato CIB said two children, aged six and one-years-old, were referred to partner agencies for check up while a third child was away when officers searched the Hamilton East property this morning.

"Investigators were assisted by members of the Waikato Armed Offenders Squad and the Auckland based Northern Clan Lab Team in carrying out their search.

"Given the large amounts of cash involved in the methamphetamine trade it is not unusual for offenders to arm themselves to protect their investments and the presence of armed staff ensures the safety of not only our own staff but the public as well."

An alleged methamphetamine lab and chemicals were located in the garage at the address.

Mr Keall said given the toxic, volatile nature of the chemicals involved in the manufacture of methamphetamine the experience of the specialist clan lab team was invaluable.

"They can offer expert, on-site advice such as risks posed by exposure to the chemicals which is why the children at the address were referred to health professionals to ensure their safety."

"A 38-year-old man from the address was charged with possession of equipment for the manufacture of methamphetamine and he will appear in the Hamilton District Court later this week. Further charges are likely once our analysis and investigation is completed."
