Inaugural
meeting for Canterbury Water Kaikōura Zone
Committee
The Kaikōura Zone Committee will meet for its first public meeting on Tuesday September 13 at Takahanga Marae.
At midday the zone committee will assemble at Takahanga Marae for a Powhiri before commencing the meeting at 1pm. People who want to go to the meeting need to attend the Powhiri so they can be welcomed onto the Marae.
At the meeting the zone committee will hear presentations on issues relevant to water management in the zone. These include the state of the water in the region, cultural values, Canterbury Water targets, and priority areas for Immediate Steps biodiversity funding.
The Kaikōura water management zone committee was officially launched on 15 July at the Fyffe Country Lodge. It is the eighth to begin addressing local water issues using the goals and methods developed via the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.
The Kaikōura Zone Committee will meet monthly to gather information about the region and its water resource with the goal of developing a Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for the management of the region's water resource.
A number of field trips are also planned so members can visit areas of significance and meet with community members.
The Kaikōura Zone Committee members are; Ted Howard, Matt Hoggard, Ron Mackle, Tony Blunt, Derrick Millton and Sarah Beardmore, Kaikōura Mayor Winston Gray, Environment Canterbury Commissioner David Bedford and Rūnanga representative Gina Solomon.
The Kaikōura Zone Committee operates as a joint committee of the Kaikōura District Council and Environment Canterbury. Committee meetings are open to the public.
