Remarkables Market returns for second summer season

The hugely popular Remarkables Market re-opens for its second summer season next week.

The market will open on Saturday October 22 during Labour Weekend. Once again locals and visitors will be able to browse, shop, enjoy a coffee, brunch or lunch in a sunny location with spectacular 360-degree mountain views, while listening to music from the very talented Marc Hamilton.

Opening day will be celebrated with lots of giveaways including 15 free coffees for earlybirds buying between 8am and 8.30, free face painting and balloon magic, 50 herbs being given away to keen gardeners between 8.30am and 9.30am and 50 reusable Envirosac bags between 9.30am and 10.30am.

Running every Saturday from 8am to 1pm, the Remarkables Market will continue until Easter 2012 apart from Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Housed in and around Remarkables' red farm barn, the market is easy to find, approximately 100m from the main entrance to Remarkables Park Town Centre and well signposted.

The European-inspired market will again feature independent artisans, foodies, growers, and farmers, selling fresh seasonal produce and locally-produced high quality crafts.

Among those returning from the successful inaugural market season are Aspiring Organics, Traditional Heritage Preserves, 3 Little Rascals, Bonjour Café from Arrowtown, Melt Candles, Jackson Cupid Coffee Cart, Gourmet Kitchen, Peonies2U, Gourmet Kitchen, Fresh Fish Brothers, Waitiri Creek, Pretty Kiwi and Mayo Homewares. Also returning are the multi award-winning Deep Creek Deli, Kapuka Pork, Church Hill Salmon, Southern Jewels and Gibbston Valley Cheese.

On opening day there will be fabulous fresh organic fruit and vegetables from Aspiring Organics in Wanaka, and Freeway Orchard in Cromwell will also be there with $10 fruit and vegetable specials.

From the end of November and into early December there will be strawberries, raspberries and gooseberries on offer, and then in December and the New Year cherries, blueberries, stonefruit and a wider range of seasonal vegetables will also appear as they are ready.

Remarkables Park Special Projects Co-Ordinator Olivia Porter, who initiated the market last year, said she was handing the reins over to Market Manager Sherryn Smith to work on other exciting projects.

Ms Smith said she was delighted to announce new stallholders this season including Stir Tea, Parioli Ltd, Fancypant Designs, Nutlands South, FSB Jewellery and Halo Dog Goodies (providing for the market's canine friends).

Five Wakatipu High School students and teacher Megan Ide will be the market's 'friendly market helpers' throughout the entire market season to help with fundraising efforts for a sister city exchange trip to Aspen.

The students will also sell strawberry cuttings and compost at some of the markets.

There are still opportunities for clubs, schools and not-for-profit organisations to fundraise, and any local musicians and buskers looking to provide entertainment should contact the Market team.

Remarkables Market has plenty of parking immediately adjacent to the market and is within easy walking distance of the Remarkables Park Town Centre for those travelling by bus.

Remarkables Market is still accepting applications from potential traders but recommends people register early to guarantee their place. Vendors can secure their stalls in advance for either an 11-week or 23-week period, or on a weekly casual basis.
