Civic awards recognise service to Hastings community

There are many Hastings people who give a vast amount of their time to valuable, voluntary service to the community and a number of these people will be recognised in the 2012 Civic Honours awards.

Hastings District Council is calling for nominees for the awards which honour individuals, groups or organisations which have made a significant contribution to the district.

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule says “The Civic Honours Awards are not just long service awards. They recognise those who make a big difference to the community, whatever their age or how long they have been involved in helping the community. It is important that everyone identifies those members of their organisation or community who are deserving of the honour and puts in a nomination.”

Each person or group can be nominated in just one of the following categories, Arts and Culture, Health and Welfare, Sport and Recreation, Education and Youth, New Volunteer, Youth Volunteer.

“These awards recognise our stand-out residents for their dedication, perseverance and tenacity in fulfilling their aim to help, teach or nurture others or for their length of service,” Mr Yule says.

Mr Yule says” There are so many people who give up their time in an effort to make our district a better and more caring place to live. Without them many of the things that happen in our community that we take for granted, would not happen.”

The nominations will be judged by the Council’s Civic Pride Committee before the awards are presented at a ceremony in early May.

Nomination forms will be available from Tuesday November 1st at the Hastings, Havelock North and Flaxmere libraries or reception at the council building in Lyndon Road. The forms can also be downloaded from www.hastingsdc.govt.nz/community-awards

Entries close on February 17th 2012.
