Wellingtonians’ opportunity to support refugees

Tuesday 28th of February will be a one-off opportunity to see an award winning film and to support refugee-background communities throughout the Wellington region.

“The fundraiser is an opportunity for Wellingtonians to have a great night out and support our work with 15 different refugee-background communities,” says Tim O’Donovan, General Manager of ChangeMakers Refugee Forum.

ChangeMakers are screening for one night only the award-winning documentary YES MADAM, SIR, the epic life story of Asia Nobel Prize winner, Kiran Bedi – India’s first woman police officer. The film carries the audience through an emotional, tumultuous, frustrating and often hilarious journey of a person who defies all odds, makes history, ruffles feathers, and who triumphs to ultimately affect change from within a centuries-old world.

“The resilience and determination of Kiran Bedi is as inspiring as that of people from refugee backgrounds, whose journeys do not end when arriving here, but rather continue in the resettlement process,” adds Tim.

ChangeMakers supports people from refugee backgrounds to participate fully in New Zealand life through community development, capacity building, research and advocacy by working with refugee-background women, youth, and leaders.

Ticket purchase for the film gets people in to win spot-prizes kindly supplied by Commonsense Organics, Wellington’s local Indian specialty store The Guava Tree, a therapeutic massage, and free treats from RJ’s Licorice. The film will be showing at Paramount Cinema, Tuesday 28th of February. Spot prizes for the evening will be held at 6:30pm, followed by screening of the film YES MADAM, SIR at 7:00pm.

Funds raised from the film will support ChangeMakers’ work.
