What’s on this week?
Friday 9 March
Farewell to the Godwits
Southshore Spit Reserve, South New Brighton
A full complement of Christchurch’s much-loved visitors, the bar-tailed Godwits, will embark on their epic journey back to Alaska. Traditionally, at the end of each summer, Christchurch residents have the opportunity to bid farewell to the Godwits (kuaka) at a brief and informative ceremony before they head back to their Alaskan breeding grounds. The return path takes several weeks with stopovers around China’s Yellow Sea, the Korean Peninsula and Japan, before the home-run crossing of the Bering Sea to Alaska.
