Eastgate Shopping Centre passes CERA report

CHRISTCHURCH’S EASTGATE SHOPPING CENTRE PASSES CERA CERTIFICATION

Christchurch’s Eastgate Shopping Centre has received a positive engineering report from the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) which confirms that the complex meets the new seismic standards.

Eastgate’s centre manager Graeme Roberts said, “Passing the high benchmark set by CERA is very good news indeed for our Eastgate tenants and our shoppers. We’ve worked hard with our consulting engineers, Connor Consulting, and Powell Fenwick Consultants, to ensure Eastgate complies with the new stricter quake-loading standards.

Connor Consulting’s Ian Connor said, “We’ve been working with Eastgate’s management since the 22 February and subsequent earthquakes and were confident that the Centre would attain its CERA certification. Buildings in the Eastgate Shopping Centre complex have capacities between 58% and 135% of current design code loadings, which is well in excess of the 33% of current code capacity - the minimum expectation for re-occupation post-earthquake. The Centre is structurally stable and complies with current standards for retail occupancy.”

Graeme Roberts says the CERA certification means Eastgate can confidently put in place its plans for the future. “We’re currently finalising new leases that take over some reconfigured ground floor space, and we’re continuing to develop a community hub for the people of east Christchurch,” says Graeme.

Eastgate Shopping Centre is owned by NPT Limited. NPT’s acting chief executive Kerry Hitchcock says, “We’re very pleased that Eastgate has passed the CERA certification. We’re grateful for the hard work put in by the Centre’s management team, Arrow International and our consulting engineers to obtain this CERA certification.”

NPT Limited is an NZX-listed company (NPT). It has a diversified portfolio of retail, commercial and industrial properties located in Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and Christchurch. NPT was established in 1994 as a unit trust, The National Property Trust. On 1 April 2011 the trust was corporatised and became NPT Limited.
