An unsettled week

An active procession of weather systems maintains an unsettled theme to the weather across New Zealand this week.

MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett commented,"With several different weather systems to come, it will again be a week where we keep the raincoats close to hand."

There is expected to be what meteorologists call 'blocking' in the atmosphere over the next few days which will tend to slow the weather systems down. Corbett said, "Think of it like a boulder in a stream, blocking the fast flowing water and allowing an eddy to remain in the same position for some time."

A new weather system will arrive from the Tasman Sea on Tuesday. This system is expected to bring a period of rain to northern and eastern New Zealand.Showers and some thunderstorms follow for the northern half of the North Island.

Rain or showers ease across the country on Thursday as the centre of the low moves into the open spaces of the Pacific.

The end of the week looks drier for a time, before another active system moves in over the weekend.
