Auckland mourns fallen in Afghanistan

Mayor Len Brown says the thoughts of Aucklanders are with the families of the two fallen soldiers and the six wounded in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal Rory Malone of Auckland and Lance Corporal Pralli Durrer of Christchurch were killed when they went to the aid of Afghan police ambushed in Bamiyan province.

Six other New Zealand soldiers were wounded.

“On behalf of this city I convey my deepest sympathies to their families – may the support of a nation bring them strength through this terrible time,” says the Mayor. “Their sons will be remembered as heroes.”

The Mayor says the New Zealand Defence Force has a proud tradition keeping the peace throughout the world. “The ever-growing number of attendees at ANZAC Day commemorations are proof New Zealanders recognise the selfless work and sacrifice of our servicemen and women.”
