The state of our environment | July 2012
When it rains for nearly two thirds of the month and the sports grounds are sodden, July won’t be remembered for basking in sunshine.
The month started and ended in a wet fashion, particularly in southern areas, giving a boost to river levels that were running lower than usual due to two consecutive dry months. No doubt we will see the generous July rain reflected in groundwater levels in next month’s report.
Cloudy skies kept maximum temperatures a little lower than usual but helped ward off the frosts. Believe it or not there was enough fine, settled weather during the middle of the month to give us five days of poor air quality in Hastings and one in Awatoto. We can’t win come rain or shine!
