Some rain still to come then a reprieve

The slow moving weather system that has been producing persistent and sometimes heavy rain across parts of New Zealand is expected to give another burst on Tuesday before easing.

Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett commented "The complex weather system should dump more rain over eastern parts of the South Island in the next 24-36 hours before breaking up, allowing the rain to ease."

Some parts of Canterbury have already received over 100mm of rain and are vulnerable to further flooding over the next day or two with the ground so sodden. MetService has re-issued a Severe Weather Warning for Canterbury and eastern parts of Otago because of the threat of further rain.

Across the north and west of the North Island, there are likely to be showers over the next several days, some of which may be heavy.

This same weather system has brought some welcome snow to ski fields in the last couple of days, especially in the South Island.

Once the complex low weakens, it will allow a westerly flow to spread across New Zealand later in the week, bringing drier weather to eastern areas.
