ANZAC Cliffs work given the go ahead

ANZAC Cliffs work given the go ahead

Consent has been granted for Horizons Regional Council and PMB Land Co to begin realignment works on ANZAC Cliffs in Palmerston North improving flood protection, water quality, and safety for those using the river.

Hearing commissioners for the consent were satisfied with the application and the environmental codes of practice for river works would minimise river disturbance.

Although the proposal will have an effect on the landscape of the cliffs, the commissioners felt that overall these were partly mitigated by way of conditions but also the positive effects of creating a safer environment for the community.

The works will result in less overall sediment in the Manawatu River, protection of residential land, and enhance public access and walking opportunities. Currently it is estimated that up to 20,000m3 of sediment per year is entering the river from the cliff and this erosion will cease with the completion of the works.

“We are really pleased with this result as we have been able to address flood protection and water quality concerns plus address the issues of the wider community”, says Horizons project engineer, Derek McKee.

“We are waiting for the completion of the appeals period and then under consultation with the project partners, we will get started”.

As with other aspects of the City Reach Project, the opportunity will be taken to include recreational access and amenity enhancements. Horizons will work closely with Rangitane iwi to ensure planting of the re-contoured cliff is compatible with vegetation on the adjoining Te Motu O Poutoa pa site, and opportunities will be sought to extend public walkways in the area.

The overall works at ANZAC Park Cliffs is a collaborative effort between Horizons, Palmerston North City Council and PMB Landco Ltd, a subsidiary of the Higgins Group.

The appeals period will end on September 12 2012.
