New museum deputy director brings strong museum and curatorial experience to Rotorua

ROTORUA 29.08.12: Rotorua Museum’s new deputy director Pamela Lovis is expected to bring substantial museum experience to Rotorua and outstanding curatorial credentials when she commences her new role with Rotorua District Council in October. Ms Lovis' appointment was announced today by Rotorua Museum director Stewart Brown.

Ms Lovis is currently a Senior Product Development Advisor in the Experience division of the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa, and has also held senior curatorial positions with The Science Centre and Manawatu Museum in Palmerston North, and a science technician role with the National Museum in Wellington.

Mr Brown said her broad-based museum and exhibition background, and specialist curatorial and online skills, would complement his own business and tourism background, providing an effective balance to the museum’s senior management.

“We’re looking forward to having Pamela on board at the museum as we see her playing a major role in helping us to take what is already a very highly regarded and multi-award winning museum, to even higher levels.”

Ms Lovis has a BSC (Hons, First Class) in geography from Canterbury University and a Diploma in Museum Studies (Distinction) from Massey University.

She says modern museum interpretation allows exciting opportunities for audiences to engage, and digital initiatives offer endless opportunities for both online and on-floor experiences.

“I passionately believe that museums are integral to raising communities’ overall level of understanding and experience, and thereby making a difference to society. I’m excited about the opportunity to further those aspirations with the museum team in Rotorua.”
