Never too young to be a gardener

Never too young to be a gardener

Here’s a different option for parents in this high-tech era: A small, child-friendly garden plot where the kids can grow healthy snacks to pick and eat.

This will be the focus of a free workshop at Hollard Gardens on Sunday (9 September), when both construction and use of children’s gardens to be covered. It will be aimed at children as well as parents, and one lucky participant will go home with a wooden garden kitset.

Children’s gardens can be made from wooden pallets, tractor or car tyres, or even gumboots. Easy-to-grow seeds and plants for children to eat include snow peas, strawberries, mixed-colour carrots, edible flowers and baby beets.

Sunday’s workshop will run from 2pm to 4pm at Bernie's Home Garden, a demonstration area at Hollard Gardens where a number of different food growing principles and ideas are put into practice.

It is part of a year-round programme of free events at Hollard Gardens, Pukeiti and Tupare, the three heritage gardens owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council on behalf of the people of the region.
