Walk Cycle Wellington mobile app launched

Walk Cycle Wellington mobile app launched

If you enjoy walking and cycling in the Wellington region you can now plan or change your journey en route with the Walk Cycle Wellington mobile app.

To install the free app go to www.journeyplanner.org.nz/app

The mobile app is the first of its kind in New Zealand, complementing Greater Wellington’s ground-breaking online walking and cycling journey planner.

Simon Kennett, Greater Wellington’s Active Transport Coordinator, says the beauty of the mobile app is its convenience.

“For example, if you’re in a café having a break during your walking or cycling trip you can explore new destinations or alternative ways of getting home.

"You can continue planning and making changes to your journey while you’re out and about – you don’t have to be sitting in front of a computer. It gives you a lot more options and flexibility and helps you to be a bit more adventurous and spontaneous!”

“Like the online journey planner, the cycling and walking app will navigate your journey for you, using a database of decades of local knowledge and experience of shortcuts and off-road paths.

“The app can tell you how long your journey will take and how hilly your trip will be. And if you’re keen to know the carbon emissions you’ll save on your journey, or how much money you’ll save by not driving, the app will tell you.

“The walking and cycling app covers the Greater Wellington region so it’s a fantastic tool to help people explore parts of the region that are not so familiar to them.

"And with daylight saving on our doorstep, now is a great time to download the app.”

The cycling and walking mobile app is the latest addition to Greater Wellington’s transport information resources, all designed to make it easy for people to become less reliant on cars for getting around the region.

Resources include the online walking and cycling journey planner, detailed cycling maps and the Metlink website and mobile app which have all the public transport information you need. And for those commuting trips that cannot be made by bike, on foot or by public transport, there’s the Let’s Carpool website. Let’s Carpool finds carpooling buddies for you, taking all the hassle out of carpooling.

The first 100 people to download the Walk Cycle Wellington app and send the words ‘Prize Draw’ to the app’s feedback function will go into the draw to win a double pass to the All Blacks v Argentina game this weekend or one of six 32GB USB sticks.
