Options for Anzac Avenue/Castle Street Intersection

Options for Anzac Avenue/Castle Street Intersection

Dunedin (Monday 3 September) - The New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) has approached the Council regarding cycle safety at the Anzac Avenue/Castle Street intersection.

The NZTA has had four options developed, of which two merit further investigation. Option two is a simple squaring of the intersection whereas option four is a more radical street closure.

Option four would involve a significant change to the roading network, but it could offer a better fit with the existing land use in the area (high tourist and pedestrian volume) and scope for amenity improvements on Anzac Avenue and in the Railway Reserve. It would, however, entail more significant community consultation.

The NZTA’s preference is for option two, but it is supportive of pursuing option four if that is the Council’s preferred option.

The NZTA owns the intersection and would fund the project.

Fuller details of options two and four will be presented to the Infrastructure Services Committee on Tuesday 4 September.
