Get on Your Bike at Hampton Downs

Get on Your Bike at Hampton Downs

Before taking to the road this summer, motorcyclists are being encouraged to brush up on their riding skills at Hampton Downs.

In support of reducing motorcycle accidents and fatalities, Waikato District Council and four other local councils are subsidising a one day ‘Road Safe Rider’ training course on 6 October 2012.

The Road Safe Rider course will cater for a range of motorcyclist skills and experience levels, said road safety co-ordinator, Megan Jolly.

“There is always something a motorcyclist can learn, whether it’s sharpening up on cornering or honing emergency braking skills.

“This course is an excellent way for people to get some practise in and improve their bike skills in a safe environment before the busy summer period starts,” she said.

Statistics show the number of motorcycle crashes in the Waikato region have reduced over the past few years, from 12 fatalities in 2009 to two fatalities in 2011. Nationally there were 53 fatalities in 2008 and 35 in 2011, a downward trend Ms Jolly hopes to see continuing.

“Over the past two years we have held a number of subsidised motorcycle skills training courses across the Waikato which have been well attended.

“The Road Safe Rider course will be run by qualified NZ Transport Authority motorcycling instructors and will provide an opportunity for people to familiarise themselves with their motorcycles in a safe environment, without oncoming traffic or hazards,” said Ms Jolly.

For more information, or to register for the $125.00 Road Safe Rider course please visit www.roadsafe.co.nz or telephone 0800 BE ROADSAFE.
