Tawa charity Kiwi Community Assistance expanding rapidly
Tawa Charity Expanding Rapidly
Kiwi Community Assistance has outgrown its current headquarters – a garage and are looking for new premises in the Tawa area. The new depot needs a kitchen area for us to prepare the food parcels, a toilet and wash basin, storage area and an office space. Total floor space required is about 50-100 square metres.
As we have no running costs, all of our running expenses are met by our sponsors and volunteers.
Is anyone able to assist us?
About Us
After watching the TV documentary Inside Child Poverty New Zealand at the end of November 2011, a Tawa couple decided they were in a position to try and make a difference. They started contacting agencies in the local community to find out what services were most needed.
They contacted friends, families and used Facebook social networking to solicit donations of Christmas presents, food, and household goods for distribution through the agencies.
KCA provide or assist in the provision of household goods, clothing, toys, footwear, books, cds, dvds, and perishable and non perishable foods for families in need of a little help in the Northern suburbs of Wellington, Porirua, Lower Hutt (food parcels only) and Kapiti Coast (food parcels only).
Unlike other charities our donors are guaranteed that 100% of their donations go to the families that we assist. None of your donations goes towards administration or operational costs of our charity. These costs are absorbed by our volunteers and sponsors, enabling us to pass on your donations free of charge.
We are a registered charity. For more details please go to our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/kiwicommunityassistance
Our
Mission
We are an independent group of like minded
people working together to reduce the stress of people in
our community who require assistance with basic needs. We
will do this by providing or assisting in the provision of
household goods, clothing and food for people in our
area.
How We Work
Kiwi Community Assistance
co-ordinates the distribution of donated goods by working
with local organisations such as the Citizens Advice Bureau
Budgeting Service - Johnsonville, Agape Budgeting Services,
Supergrans Lower Hutt, Porirua and Kapiti, Wesley Community
Action – Cannons Creek, Birthright Wellington and Kapiti,
Te Roopu
Awhina ki Porirua – Family Start Programme, Porirua
Budget Service, Taeaomanino Trust and other agencies who
keep a register of local people that require
assistance.
Each week Kiwi Community Assistance puts up a list on our Facebook page asking for donations of various goods for a variety of clients completing budgeting. These items include fresh fruit and vegetables, meat packs, curtains, small household appliances, baby gear, and clothing/footwear for all members of the families we assist.
We have a number of drop-off points in Wellington and Kapiti. We are actively seeking additional drop off points. The areas that don’t have a drop off point have volunteer drivers who pick up the donations.
Items donated are sorted and are distributed to the agencies on a regular basis.
We aim to distribute as many fresh fruit, vegetables and bread banana box sized food parcels as we can assemble each week to families in need. We started off in Wellington Northern suburbs and we now encompass Porirua and Hutt City.
