Winner Of Palmerston North Youth Community Spirit Award Announced

Lexie Radley of Freyberg High School has been named as the winner of the TrustPower Palmerston North Youth Community Spirit Award.

Run in conjunction with the TrustPower Palmerston North Community Awards, the TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award recognises secondary school students’ service to the school and the community. The Award is jointly run by TrustPower and the Palmerston North City Council.

Local high schools were asked to recommend one student to be considered for the Award. The finalists for this award are Simon Horne of Palmerston North Boys’ High School, Amanda Wallis of Palmerston North Girls’ High School and Ailesh Mallon of St Peter’s College.

To be considered for the TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award students had to have given service to school or community projects, treated others with care and respect and been a good ambassador for the school and the Palmerston North region.

TrustPower Community Relations Representative Teresa Partridge says Lexie is an outstanding woman who truly knows the value of community spirit.

“To begin with Lexie is Deputy House leader at her school running weekly assemblies, as well as inter-house sports and events. Last year Lexie organised a canned food drive for the schools animal rights group. She is definitely a quiet server being part of the backstage crew at school productions and helping with the make-up – a huge job which is not often seen.

Her reach doesn’t stop there – she also spreads her love into the community at Girl’s Brigade, coaching for a year eight netball team which is a commitment of two evenings a week, volunteering at Saturday morning music teaching three to five year olds how to read and play music. Lexie also volunteers at the Friends of St David’s group on Thursday afternoons as well as running craft events at Karina Rest Home.

Lexie shows true selfless motivation, where humble service is at the heart of all she does,” says Mrs Partridge.

For winning the Award, Lexie will receive a framed certificate and $500 prize money, with $250 going to Lexie personally and $250 being given to a community group of her choice.

The TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award will be presented at the TrustPower Palmerston North Community Awards, being held tonight, Wednesday 12 September, where Lexie will announce which community group will receive her $250 donation.
