Water supply improvement for Wellington’s western suburbs

News release
13 September 2012

Water supply improvement for Wellington’s western suburbs

Work to improve the Greater Wellington Regional Council’s bulk water supply pipeline between Ngauranga and Karori will begin on 24 September, taking up to seven weeks.

Contractors will install a valve in a section of the Ngauranga to Karori pipeline at the Otari-Wilton’s Bush car park on Wilton Road. The pipeline connects to Wilton’s Warwick Street water supply pumping station which, along with the Karori pumping station, supplies water to the reservoirs of Wellington city’s western suburbs. The new valve will reduce the time required to carry out pipeline repair work.

Cr Nigel Wilson, Chair of Greater Wellington’s Social and Cultural Wellbeing Committee, says the Ngauranga to Karori valve installation is an important milestone for Greater Wellington’s programme of water supply network improvements. “Once completed, this project will give Wellington city’s western suburbs additional resilience in the face of a disruption, whether it’s routine pipe maintenance or an earthquake.”

John Duggan, Greater Wellington’s Water Supply Engineering and Projects Team Leader, says that traffic disruptions during the works will be kept to a minimum but there will be some inconvenience to the public.

“Nine car parks will be out of action at the Otari-Wilton’s Bush car park for the duration of the project. However, 10-12 of the car parks will continue to be available during the works and the two disabled parks will be temporarily moved to a new location within the car park,” he says.
