iMove comes to Hastings Intermediate

Students from Hastings Intermediate are the joint winners of the 2012 Hastings District Council iWay Design Challenge, for their development of the iMove campaign.

The challenge encourages students from Hastings schools to develop ideas which help create a walking and cycling city and break down the barriers to these transport options. Judging was done by a panel comprising Hastings District Council staff and design engineers.

The three, year 8 students from Hastings Intermediate designed and trialled the iMove campaign that challenged students to stop taking the car to school. Students had a ticket stamped each time they arrived at school by foot, by bike or on a scooter, and completed tickets went into a draw to win prizes. Survey results showed that 80% of the kids who arrived at school by car before iMove, chose a different option during the campaign. That amounted to more than 70 new bikers, walkers or scooter riders arriving at school.

Hastings Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says “I congratulate all the students who took part in this challenge. Encouraging children to ride or walk to school is a vital part of the iWay strategy and this challenge allows young people to focus on how to make walking and cycling safer and therefore more acceptable.”

Cynthia Bowers says “The competition is a great way of involving the community in developing ideas that will help us design future iWay projects, and we will certainly look at implementing this idea. Congratulations to Hastings Intermediate on this highly successful project. We hope their success will encourage more students to walk or cycle to school and others to think about creating new, safe travel options.”

Hastings Intermediate shared the 2012 iWay Design Challenge with Twyford School. The challenge is a collaboration between the Hastings District Council, Futureintech and IPENZ (Institution of Professional Engineers NZ).

iWay is a Hastings District Council initiative which aims to make walking and cycling easy, safe and fun.
