Upper Waitaki Zone Committee meeting

MEDIA ADVISORY

14 November 2012

Upper Waitaki Zone Committee meeting

The Upper Waitaki Zone Committee will meet on Friday 16 November, at the Mackenzie Country Inn, Twizel.

The committee will begin its monthly public meeting by offering any members of the public in attendance a chance to have a say.

Next, the committee will hear responses from the Mackenzie and Waitaki district councils on the Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for water management.

A key focus for the committee has recently been on looking at how to prioritise, oversee, and provide local leadership on the actions detailed in its Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for water management.

The ZIP, developed in conjunction with the community, was endorsed by councils earlier this year as the basis for the design and realignment of council work and planning programmes for freshwater. It contains recommendations and actions that are ready to implement such as biodiversity and land use and water quality actions.

At the meeting the committee will also receive an update from Environment Canterbury on the progress being made implementing the recommendations made in the ZIP.

The committee will finish the meeting with a discussion on mahinga kai values in the zone before going on to look at OVERSEER® - a management tool for modelling nutrient flows.

The Upper Waitaki Zone Committee operates as a joint committee of Environment Canterbury and the Waitaki and Mackenzie District councils. Zone committee meetings are open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend.
