FREE Summer School Holiday Programmes

MEDIA RELEASE

Masterton Safe and Healthy Community Council is once again hosting FREE Summer School Holiday Programmes commencing the week of 14th January.

The programmes for children aged 5 to 13 years will be run at Lakeview, Masterton Intermediate and Masterton Primary Schools from 10.00am to 3.00pm. All enrolments will be taken at Wairarapa Community Centre, 41 Perry Street and can be downloaded from our website www.mshcc.org.nz enquiries to MSHCC 06 3788900 or Wairarapa Community Centre 09 3771022.

This years programme is open to children from Carterton to Featherston aged 11 to 13 years. A bus will depart from the Kia Ora Dairy each morning marked Charter and will stop along State Highway 2 if flagged down by pre-enrolled children.

The programme this summer is unique from anything we have seen in the Wairarapa before. The mornings will be sports based including the very popular rippa rugby. Scooter workshops on Monday for the 5 to 7 year olds will upskill them in the use of a scooter with safety a priority; scooters will then be incorporated into the morning programme.

After lunch which is supplied; the real fun starts. At Lakeview an exciting new reading programme will be introduced on Wednesdays. Children aged 11 plus will join the Mens Shed for design and build, a tinkering school. The first week we plan to build trolleys, teams of 4 will design and build their own trolley along with the trials and tribulations of design faults. The second week on the Friday you will all spend the day with Wind Warriors learning how to race Stand Up Paddleboards.

Sandy Ryan, Manager of Masterton Safe and Healthy Community Council says she designed the programme to give children the chance to experience planning, leadership, make mistakes and find creative ways to remedy the problems and most importantly working as teams to achieve an outcome. The children will be using real hand tools and power tools, painting, hammering, bolting, you name it they may be doing it; it will all come down to their design. They will also be challenged in the Stand Up Paddleboards under the safe and watchful eyes of Wind Warriors.

Children under 11 years will be involved in swimming and water activities in the afternoons.

The programme has a limited number of vacancies so parents/carers are encouraged to enroll early. Masterton Safe and Healthy Community Council closes on Friday 21 December at midday and reopens on 7 January.
